On October 24, the Redbacks hosted the Osaka Dingoes in a game that had a lot of bearing on the remaining grand final spot. What it came down to for the Redbacks was win and we're in, lose and we leave the door open for other teams. One outcome we hadn't really thought about, though, was a draw. And that's the result we got.
On a cold, drizzly afternoon, the two teams slugged out a remarkable draw, the likes of which will probably never be seen again. While a draw gave us the final grand final place, it came at a tremendous cost. About one minute from 3/4 time, Dion McKay was out on the half back flank racking up another possession in what was quite an influential performance. He had just disposed of the ball as he was challenged by an opponent. It seemed like a regular challenge, but it turned out to tragically cause a double fracture to Dion's leg.
After a delay while we waited for an ambulance, the game got underway with the Dingoes storming home to secure a draw. The last quarter was played in an understandably somber manner with most players' thoughts with their fallen friend.
The thoughts of all players are well and truly with Dion, and we'd like to wish him the speediest of recoveries.
